Library Open May 4

This coming Saturday, May 4, Mildred Johnson Library will be open from 1:00 - 5:00 pm to be available for students studying for finals or completing projects.  In addition, staff will be available to provide assistance in locating those last minute resources or helping to get access if you are having any issues.  Call the Service Desk at 701-671-2618 or email us at ndscs.library@ndscs.edu and someone will help you find your answer.

Why is it Called Agawasie Day?

In 1914, the School of Science published its first annual, called the Agawasie.

According to the authors of NDSCS: 100 Years of Excellence, the origin of this name is obscure but that in an early issue of the annual it was explained as an Indian word for Ascience.@

However, there also is a story that 2 wily students, Max Lauder and Arnold Forbes had neglected to actually research any real Indian word for science. In order to cover up their blunder, they contrived the word AAggy-Wassy@, which later became the easier form Agawasie.

After publishing the Agawasie for three years, it was discontinued from 1917 through 1920 because of World War I.  Again in 1943 and 1944 the yearbook was reduced in size and made a softcover instead of the more usual hardcover edition.

Financing the annual varied from the sale of candy, proceeds from the Penny Carnival, student activity fees, nominal sale price, and solicited advertisements.  The arrival of the annual became a day for celebration, and the annual Agawasie Day Picnic was started.

Publishing an annual yearbook was discontinued in 2004, but the day for celebration continues as Agawasie Day.

National Library Week 2013

Good morning, Students, Staff, Faculty, and Administration!

Happy National Library Week to you!

All of you as current employees and/or students are eligible to register to win the Nook Simple Touch Reader. Simply come to the Library anytime starting today, Tuesday at 1:00, to Friday at 4! Stay as little or as long as you like. All you have to do is quickly visit 6 EduStations promoting learning tools at stations.

What are the EduStations you ask? Great question! EduStations are various stations with various learning tools, some simple like a portable easel, some big like the Apple TV and iPads. Either way they are the beginning of many stations to come that facilitate and supplement learning. They are driven by you the learner in conjunction with you the educator.

Students and Faculty – The stations are set up as curriculum-based learning tools to assist in your journey at NDSCS and further support that “You Belong Here”. You have input to the station. Would you like certain apps for your classes? Is there a board game that reinforces learning in your curriculum area? Are there models you would like the library to purchase to be available to students during library hours to extend what you already have or supplement what you don’t? Staff and students alike can use the Apple TV and iPads Station for small group discussion allowing you to mirror the iPad to the TV monitor to utilize apps, share a presentation, etc.

Wahpeton & Fargo Staff, Faculty, and Administration– This is also for you! Mango is showcased. Mango is an interactive language program with 44 languages that allows you to log in from anywhere with your library card and has unlimited simultaneous users allowing you to cross off “learn a foreign language” on your bucket list.

If you would like a tour, ask for Tina and I will give you one if I am available Tuesday at 1:00 through Friday at 4:00!

The EduStationsare just in their beginning and YOU have input into where they go! We welcome your input: put your ideas on the survey, call me, email me, stop by…we are waiting to hear from you!

End of the Semester

With the end of the semester approaching, all current library IDs and passwords will expire.  Students who are registered for summer semester or for fall will be able to use their cards, so be sure to get registered as soon as you can.  If you cannot use your card, please call and we'll see about getting updated.

From Gooroo's Pro-Magnon Kitchen - The Barnes & Noble Review  This looks like it would be fun to adapt.  Everyone loves to eat, and maybe our Culinary Arts folks could use it in the Red River Inn for a fun meal!

Free audiobooks each week from Overdrive

Overdrive's new program enables youto download two free audiobooks every week starting June 14^th until the end of August. The program is called SYNC and the website is www.audiobooksync.com. 

 Every week SYNC will release two different titles that you can download and then listen to whenever you like.  All you need is OverDrive Media Console, either on you computer or you can download the mobile app.

 
In order for you to access these free audiobooks you will need to go to www.audiobooksync.com  If you have any questions that the site doesn't answer, please check with the library.  We'll find out!

Summer classes at NDSCS/Fargo

Summer classes will begin June 5, 2012.  Included will be: liberal arts courses in mathematics, history, communications and the social sciences. In addition, a full slate of ASC courses will be offered along with courses in the nursing and EMT/Paramedic programs. All of the ASC courses and liberal arts courses, except HIST 102, will follow a Monday-Thursday format with classes scheduled for seventy-five minute periods. HIST 102 will meet Tuesday/Wednesday for one hundred and fifty minutes. ASC 84, a two credit course, will meet Monday, Wednesday and Thursday while ASC 88, a one credit course, will meet on Tuesdays. ProQuest Maintenance

ProQuest® will be performing infrastructure maintenance on Saturday, May 5, 2012. A twelve (12) hour maintenance window will be required for this maintenance. The window will take place from Saturday, May 5, 2012, at 21:00 CT to Sunday, May 6, 2012 at 9:00 CT. This means the ProQuest databases may not be available during that time (Saturday night through Sunday morning.)

As always, Mildred Johnson Library is open on the Saturday before Finals Week. This year we are open from 1:00 - 5:00 on Saturday, May 5. Time to settle down and complete your projects or study for exams in a quiet environment with resources you need.

We are Your library, no matter where you are

The staff of Mildred Johnson Library are here to support all NDSCS students, though if you are not on campus that makes it a little harder. You may reach us through the college 800 number, extension 2618. Whoever answers the phone will do their best to respond. But you do have to call during college hours. During summer session we are here:

Monday - Thursday: 7:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.
Friday: 7:45 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Or you can reach us via email if we are closed. We can send you books, other items, copies of articles, and so on. Just let us know what you want and we'll see what we can do to get those things to you.

It's National Library Week

All across the nation, libraries are celebrating National Library Week. No matter where you are studying, there should be a library near you having a special event or two. Check them out! We connect our readers to many resources - books, articles, help, some in print and some online. If you are near Wahpeton, come to MJ Library to "Guess the Staff", which book goes with which library staff member. We will be happy to see you.

Guides to Research

We have recently started to add Guides to Research in several topics that will help you to use the library resources more effectively. There is a new link on the web page to the LibGuides, and links to specific guides for curriculums that often use library resources. There will be new ones added over the year as time permits. Let us know if there is a topic you would like to see available.

The guides will help you locate useful magazines and journals through our databases as well as pointing to some reliable web sites. Some books in the collection are also highlighted. If you want a book, you can request this via the InterLibrary Loan link in ODIN and remember to ask that the book be mailed to you if you cannot pick it up here.

Smarthinking

Do you know about Smarthinking? This is a service that NDSCS supports to give you 24/7 access to tutoring and topic help. Among the several topics such as math, biology, chemistry, and writing, you can get answers to questions from a tutor, critique your paper, or interact with a live tutor.

You will need a password and login to set up your account, so first check with your instructor or with the library about access. Once you are set up, you will receive your own username and password for your own personal sessions.

With this site there is help available on many topics, whenever you need it.

Work smarter, not harder

As a student working primarily online, you may feel you do not need to look at Library resources in order to complete your assignments. However, searching and finding the scholarly materials you need is actually a more complicated process starting from a search engine. The Library purchases subscriptions to many materials - journals, magazines, e-books, newspapers = that are available to you with your library ID. Connecting through the Library web page and using your personal login, you have a wealth of items to choose from. Take advantage of this great resource that is free to you as a student.
